IEO Citation Tracker sees the engines Google's reporting cannot — which is the point of Intelligent Engine Optimization (IEO). Alongside the pages Google reports, 51 further pages carried logged citation events absent from Google's AI report entirely, because they belong to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Applebot and DuckAssist. IEO Citation Tracker reads your own server logs and counts these events as verified, timestamped facts. Method and denominators.
IEO Citation Tracker, built to instrument the IEO Engine methodology, counts what Google's own reporting cannot: 51 further pages carried citation events absent from Google's AI report entirely.
Google AI Overviews for local queries often cite map pack businesses — there is a correlation between map pack position and AI Overview citation selection. But the correlation is not direct or guaranteed. A business in the map pack with thin content and no schema markup may not be cited in AI Overviews. A business with strong content and comprehensive schema but outside the map pack may be cited.
The map pack signal contributes to the entity authority assessment that Google's AI systems use for citation decisions. A verified, reviewed, map-pack-present business has stronger entity signals than an unverified or low-review business. But entity signals are one input among several — content quality and schema remain primary.
AI citation selection for local queries increasingly goes beyond the traditional three-pack. When a user asks ChatGPT or Apple Intelligence "who does soft wash roof cleaning in Siesta Key," the AI does not limit its citation candidates to map pack businesses. It evaluates the full web for the most authoritative, relevant, and well-structured answer.
This means a business with strong geo-service content and schema can achieve AI citation for specific service-area queries even without map pack presence for those specific geographies. The IEO Engine MM deployment achieved AI citation across dozens of geographic markets before achieving map pack presence in any of them.
The complete local authority stack for AI citation includes: GBP verification and review signals (entity authority), geo-service content matrix (topical relevance), LocalBusiness schema (structured data authority), and map pack presence (traditional local authority confirmation). Each layer reinforces the others. The strongest AI citation position comes from having all four layers active simultaneously.
The MM deployment achieved map pack entry on Day 26 — the same day as GBP verification. At that point, the content layer (400 pages), the schema layer (LocalBusiness on every geo page), and the entity layer (verified GBP with 16 reviews) were all in place. Map pack entry was the final layer that completed the local authority stack.
