An AI-driven system that returns direct answers to user queries rather than lists of search results. Answer engines synthesize information from multiple sources and may or may not cite those sources visibly. Voice assistants, AI Overviews, and conversational AI interfaces are all answer engines.
The shift from search engines to answer engines fundamentally changes content optimization. Where search optimization targeted ranking position to drive clicks, answer engine optimization targets being selected as the source the system uses to generate its answer — whether or not the user ever clicks through.
