IEO Engine Glossary Term

Ranker Update

A change to the algorithms or weights that determine which sources an AI inference engine selects for citation. Ranker updates may be rolled out across all instances simultaneously or staged across regional infrastructure, producing variance in citation behavior during the rollout window.

Major AI platforms publish ranker updates frequently — sometimes daily. Most updates are minor tuning adjustments; occasional updates are significant enough to produce measurable changes in citation patterns across many sites simultaneously.

IEO Engine deployment monitoring includes attention to ranker update events. Sudden changes in citation behavior or position trajectory across multiple deployments simultaneously typically indicate a ranker update rather than a deployment-specific cause.
