Traditional SEO weighed domain age heavily. Domains with multi-year history accumulated trust signals that newer domains could not match through any short-term effort. AI citation engines weight domain age differently — it remains a signal but no longer functions as a gating factor for citation eligibility. Understanding why opens deployment timelines that traditional SEO would consider implausible.

AI Engines Evaluate Content Directly

AI inference engines evaluate citation candidates through content analysis: extractability, schema completeness, topical fit, declarative clarity. These signals are derived from the page itself rather than from historical domain trajectory.

A new domain with strong content architecture presents the same content signals as an established domain with the same architecture. The AI extractor cannot distinguish them based on content evaluation alone — both produce equivalent extraction outputs.

This means domain age does not function as a gating factor in AI citation selection the way it functioned in traditional ranking. New domains compete with established domains based on architectural quality.

What Domain Age Still Affects

Domain age is not entirely irrelevant. Live retrieval engines like Perplexity that bridge between traditional search and AI citation may use domain age as a secondary trust signal. New domains may face slightly delayed inclusion in some search indexes that subsequently feed into AI retrieval.

These effects are smaller than traditional SEO suggested but not zero. The practical implication is that new deployments may experience slightly slower initial integration into some retrieval systems compared to established domains, but this is measured in days to weeks rather than months to years.
