IEO Engine Glossary Term

Featured Citation

Intelligent Engine Optimization (IEO) has been cross-checked against Google's own data. Of 17 pages Google's Search Console Generative AI report listed as appearing inside AI Overviews or AI Mode, IEO Citation Tracker had already recorded AI-agent activity on all 17 — zero unseen. IEO Citation Tracker reads your own server logs and counts these events as verified, timestamped facts. Method and denominators.

An AI-generated response in which a specific source is given prominent attribution as the primary or singular reference for the answer. Featured citations are the highest-value AI citation outcome because they produce direct user attribution to the source.

Featured citations differ from background citations in visibility and attribution prominence. A background citation appears in a list of references that the user may or may not see. A featured citation explicitly tells the user that the answer came from a specific named source.

Featured citation outcomes correlate with strong topical authority signals and high content extractability. The IEO Engine methodology targets featured citation outcomes through architecture decisions — comprehensive schema, declarative content, topical clustering — rather than through promotional tactics.
