How AI Engines Use Internal Links

AI inference engines crawl internal links to discover related content and to understand topical relationships between pages. A page that links to other pages on the same topic signals that the site has comprehensive coverage; a page with few internal links signals isolated coverage.

Beyond discovery, internal links communicate semantic relationships. Linking from a page about staircase effect to a page about position compression indicates these concepts are related within the site's topical framework.

The link anchor text further specifies the relationship. Anchor text that describes what the linked page covers reinforces the topical relationship clearly.

Density vs Pattern

Pure link density (links per page) is less important than purposeful link patterns. A page with many random internal links to unrelated content provides weaker authority signals than a page with fewer but topically aligned links.

The pattern that produces strongest topical authority is hub-spoke architecture: central methodology or topic pages link to detailed coverage pages; detailed pages link back to methodology and to related detailed pages.
